Comprehensive Eye Health Examinations

We provide complete eye care for children, teens and adults.

As part of your examination, your visual acuity (the sharpness of your vision) will be assessed and a "refraction" will be performed to determine your eyeglass prescription.  We'll also assess your focussing abillity for reading, and will assess how your eyes work together as well as their abilty to accurately focus at distance and near.

Our comprehensive eye health examinations check your eyes inside and out for glaucoma damage, cataracts and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases. For patients who are at risk for glaucoma, we use the advanced technology Heidelberg HRT3 Optic Nerve Scanner to more thoroughly examine patients and track for potential change over time.  Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and we pride ourselves on the accuracy of our eyewear prescriptions.

The doctor will also evaluate the inner structures of your eyes, including the retina and optic nerve. In many cases we may recommend dilating eye drops, which cause the iris to open widely, giving the doctor a  more optimal view of the internal structures of your eyes. The effects of the dilating drops usually begin to subside after a few hours; however, it is wise to bring good sunglasses to help you see in bright sunlight following a dilated eye exam. While your eyes are dilated, close work or reading may be difficult, and bright sunlight may be annoying.

After performing your examination, your doctor will discuss your results, explain your prescription and discuss your overall eye health. Options such as glasses, contact lenses, eye medications, or even eye surgery will be reviewed with you.

We use Digital Retinal Imaging at our office. This allows us to photo document the condition of your eyes and is extremely useful for monitoring the condition of your eye health. It is also allows our doctors to better explain the condition of your eyes and since it is digital, the results are viewable immediately.

Based on the recently published Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) study which indicated patients with thin cornea and elevated eye pressure are at greater risk to having advanced field loss, we have added Ultrasonic Pachymetery for patients at risk for glaucoma.
